Publisher's Note
In addition to publishing relevant meeting announcements and news items, Glycobiology's Glyco-forum is intended to provide a forum for letters discussing controversial or newsworthy items of interest to glycobiologists.
This issue's Glyco-forum therefore focuses on the debate surrounding "glyconutrients" and has been guest edited by Professor Don McClain, University of Utah School of Medicine.
Some readers of the journal may be aware that a version of one of the articles published in this forum, "A Glyconutrient Sham," by Ronald L. Schnaar and Hudson H. Freeze, was previously published online-only via Glycobiology's advance access site, on September 13, 2007. That version was taken down from the advance access site on October 11, 2007 at Ronald Schnaar's request.
Oxford University Press, the publisher of Glycobiology, took the decision to remove the previous version of this article, with the intention of publishing a revised version as part of a themed Glyco-Forum section to ensure that the spectrum of views on this controversial topic is covered. After publication of the original version of the article it transpired, for example, that representatives of Mannatech, the company used as a case study by Schnaar and Freeze, had not had the opportunity to see the article before publication and to provide a response. Mannatech was sent the revised version of the article by Schnaar and Freeze, published here, and their response to this article also forms part of this forum.
